Wright Wednesday
For the month of March we will be focusing our “Wed Arch” on Frank Lloyd Wright. This is also the month Chicago celebrates the famous architect. PrairieMod has dubbed it the “Wright-apalooza”.
This month I hope to learn more about FLW, but I want to learn from YOU! I would like to hear about your experiences touring a FLW creation. I will share those that I collect on the last week of the month.
Next week I hope we can start a conversation about what almost made Frank more infamous than famous. The video above is the perfect lead in, so watch. Then go out and visit a Frank Lloyd Wright property and tell us about it.

One of my favorite Wright homes is the Weltzheimer-Johnson House in Oberlin, Ohio. It’s a Usonnian, and modest, but the museum that runs the public tours wants visitors to have a relaxed, and casual visit.
After a guided tour of the home, visitors are encouraged to sit and enjoy the Wright-designed furniture in the living room, to exerience what it would be like to visit the home as guest of the original owners. A collection of Wright books and copies of the plans for the house are available for browsing.
While many of Wright’s buildings are far more impressive, being able to enjoy his work without being herded through and sternly warned about touching the furniture is a wonderful change.

I finally made it out to FLW’s Darwin Martin house and Graycliff(Martin’s summer house) in Buffalo this last summer. After many years of wanting to get down there, I don’t know why it took me so long. I’m only an hour and a half away after all.
They are both wonderful houses and seeing them up close and personal is a great treat. It’s nice to imagine living in a home that actually had some deep thought put into it’s creation, rather than many of today’s homes.
The only drawback was the state of disrepair and renovations(and no interior photos!) At least they should be worth a nice trip back in a couple of years. :-)
