Using Less More Green

by Adam on April 13th, 2007

Doesn’t it seem that in order to be “Green” you need to buy a Prius, compact flourescent light bulbs (still a good idea), or install solar panels? Or just offset your glutonous consumption with Terrapasses . That’s the key isn’t it…consumption? Instead of getting rid of everything we already have, and replacing it with “Green” stuff, we should just use less.

Home Joule will help you do that, and can save you money. The concept is simple, Home Joule will notify you of peek usage times. Then you can think about what “power” you are using. Peek usage times are when the most people in your service area are using power at the same time. Since the power companies have to make more power during these times, they charge you premium prices. So if Home Joule reminds you of theses times, wouldn’t you turn off that light you left on in your bedroom even though you are downstairs watching TV?

What makes me love (and want) a Home Joule more, is how it notifies you. It uses colors. The simplest most recognizable colors Green, Yellow and Red.

hjgreen-1

Green, of course, during off peek times.

hjyellow-1

Yellow is when you are approaching peek times.

hjred-1

Red is when you start considering whether to have a light on or not while you are watching The Riches.

Home Joule is controlled by two other leading technologies companies Consumer Power Line (CPLN) and Ambient Devices. CPLN monitors and determines peek usage times in your area. They send that information to Ambient Devices. Ambient Devices uses there pager network to send that information to your Home Joule.

I guess I am telling you to buy more “Green stuff”. The Home Joule is different though. It is a tool. Helping you decide whether or not to use anything that uses power. More than likely seeing the red light you will opt to not. There by reducing energy consumption.

1 opinion for Using Less More Green

Hehe, that’s something I’ve always wondered about. Sure energy-saving items are more green, but wouldn’t it also be ungreen if you toss out your non-energy saving things, thereby generating waste, to replace them with greener alternatives?
