UPDATE: An Inconvenient Green Home

by Adam on March 23rd, 2007

This is an aerial photo of John Edwards home I found in the Carolina Journal. I told you about it in a previous post.

On Tuesday John Edwards decided to share his energy policy. During which time he was confronted about his own personal energy consumption. His response as quoted by the Sioux City Journal:

Meeting with reporters, Edwards brushed off the idea that his spacious home used too much energy, saying it uses solar power and received a five-star rating from the federal government.

Well now I have to call BULLSHIT!

The first thing I don’t see, in the photo above, or this one are solar panels. The home is 28,000 square feet. A home that size is going to require a lot of solar panels.

The next, a statement “received a five-star rating”. The federal government ratings are not graded by stars. In fact, if you wanted to brag about your homes efficiency it would by LEED Certified and registered with the USGBC.

Normally I would love to see John Edwards discredited, unfortunately if you look a little closer those black things on the green roof are solar panels. Perhaps not enough to power his whole 28,000 sq. ft. home but solar panels none the less.

Dustin, If those are the solar panels than that is more pathetic than lying about having them. How many panels do you think they are? He may be able to power A, ONE, UNO, desktop computer. Why wasn’t this feature brought up when talking about the others like: 2,000 s.f. hallway, full size gymnasium, Johns Lounge? Not overwhelming convincing support nor did you negate my BULLSHIT. Nice try.

I wasn’t trying to negate your bullshit… I agree with you. I am just saying there is two solar panels on his roof… so he isn’t lying… you are right a home that size would require a lot of solar panels, certainly a lot more then I see there… my only point was that there were some not that he was powering his house with them. Just trying to keep you honest wink wink :)

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate it! Thank you, I was just restating my point and stating it still stands. If someone proves me wrong than I will apologize and retract. Nothing against you.

Those appear to be skylights not solar panels since there are no conduit or pipes running from them. Also, it does not seem too green to me the amount of acreage that was cleared besides the ground cleared for the house. The man is a hypocrite, plain and simple.

Hey Frank, this discussion started long before I came. But looking at it , I think you might be right. They do look like skylights, not panels. It’s not a very good view. Thank you for stopping by :)
