Tree Houses of Korowai
One of the few remaining ‘stone-age‘ tribes left on this planet reside in the Korowai region of Papua New Guinea. They even practise cannibalism still! (Don’t worry, they only eat their own - not outsiders.)
One of the peculiar aspects of these folks are the tree houses that they live in. While normally built between 6 and 25 meters (20 - 80 feet) above the ground, during times of dispute with neighbors or when living in hostile areas, they’ll build their tree houses as high as 50 meters (160 feet) above ground.
The tree houses are meant to help keep the tribe’s families dry in the swampy forests where they live as well as maintain a degree of safety in a region where tribal wars are a regularly occuring event. The Korowai also do it “to see the birds and the mountains and to keep the sorcerers from climbing my stairs.”
There are a couple of web pages with more info on the tree houses of the Korowai here and here.
