The Mother Goose House

by Ingrid on September 28th, 2006

The Mother Goose house of Hazard, Kentucky always makes me smile. This house has attracted the attention of millions of people for years, including Oprah Winfrey! It’s even been featured in The New York Times.

The Mother Goose house was constructed by George Stacy. He began construction in 1935, and the project was finished in 1940.

Interesting features of this home include: egg-shaped windows, and car lights that double as the goose’s eyes.

“As far as I know, the goose was all my husband’s idea, Ollie Stacy said a few years ago. “I have no idea how he came up with that notion. He came home one day with the idea in his mind. I was surprised and I didn’t think he would go through with it. He should have been an architect,” Ollie Stacy said.

With idea in mine, Stacy ran out and shot a goose, which he then used as the model for the construction. The goose wasn’t the only thing sacrificed for the construction of this home. The Stacys made sacrifices of their own, having nowhere to live during the construction period. The couple and their sons had to live in a shack, as they had very little money. Though they couldn’t really afford the Mother Goose house, they kept on forward, and six years later, the project was finished.

These days, the Mother Goose house is an apartment with three bedrooms, living room, kitchen, bath, dining room, and family room. A grocery store has also been added.

George Stacy passed away many years ago, but his vision lives on in Hazard, Kentucky, in the shape of a 15 foot high goose.
