Offbeat Homes

The ‘Midget House’ of Brick, NJ

by Ingrid on July 12th, 2006

When I used to live in New Jersey, I spent a lot of time in Bricktown, and the ‘Midget House’ was something I got to see a few times.

Off the road and between normal-sized homes, the brick ‘Midget House’ (as the locals call it - quite politically incorrectly, I must say) is a tiny dwelling that comes fully equipped with running water, electricity, and even a working fireplace.

There are many rumors I’ve heard as to the nature of the ‘Midget House’. One rumor is that it was meant to be a dollhouse. The most predominant rumor I’ve heard - and this is what I was told the first time I went by it - is that Little People lived there once, but since their death, no one has lived there. I’ve also heard it’s haunted (but I sincerely doubt that’s true).

These days, the house has a security system installed to ward off intruders, but remains much in the same state as it always has: a beautiful little oddity among otherwise boring normalcy.
