The Hoopoe Yurt Hotel
The mighty yurt is one of the more enduring forms of architecture that we as humans have created. The portable dwelling structure has been used for centuries by the Mongolians, Kazachs and Russians on the steepes of central Asia and in recent years, the yurt has made great inroads into western culture. One particular use for yurts that I’ve been seeing more and more of is as resort and hotel accomodations.
Here is just one instance; at the Hoopoe Yurt Hotel in Cortes de la Frontera, Spain. Set amongst olive groves and a cork oak forest in the Andalucia region of the south, the Hoopoe offers a unique opportunity to stay in a yurt. They provide two styles of yurt; The Mongolian is handpainted in burnt orange and embellished with traditional motifs in green, blue and gold. The Afghani is more romantic with bent willow poles and a deep red ceiling, making it cosy and intimate.
Each yurt has an acre of private meadow with seating area and a hammock in the shade of a giant cork tree. Tasty homecooked dinners are served alfresco with plenty of wine under our pergola lit by Chinese lanterns. Oh man, I’ve suddenly got a craving for a Spanish vacation.
