Jell-O Houses!
Watch ‘em wiggle, see ‘em jiggle! Everybody loves Jell-O houses, don’t they? Ok, I’m being silly.
Yes, these are Jell-O houses, but I’m afraid they aren’t quite big enough to live in. They’re the work of American artist, Elizabeth Hickok, and part of her cool San Francisco In Jell-O sculpture project. The exhibit itself consists of just photographs and video, depicting various San Francisco landscapes. I’ll let Elizabeth explain the rest…
I make the landscapes by constructing scale models of the architectural elements which I use to make molds. I then cast the buildings in Jell-O. Similar to making a movie set, I add backdrops, which I often paint, and elements such as mountains or trees, and then I dramatically light the scenes from the back or underneath. The Jell-O sculptures quickly decay, leaving the photographs and video as the remains.
You can see more of the project at Elizabeth’s web site here and if you’re in the San Francisco area, the exhibit will be on display for one day - this Friday, February 3rd - at the Reconsidered Materials show at the Exploratorium - details here.
