It’s Sol Fest Time!

by Jennifer Chait on August 15th, 2007

Sol Fest XII is happening real soon; as in three days from now (August 18-19). I meant to plug it sooner — but darn it, I’m not going this year so I forgot.

gate-sunSol Fest is amazing. If you live close to the Solar Living Institute in Hopland, California or if you’re up for a quick-like road trip it’s a great show to attend. Alice Walker will be there this year (not a good year to miss). Other main stagers this year include Bruce Cockburn, Amy Goodman, Dar Williams, and more.

Sol Fest is the largest (I believe) green festival event. Each year people from all over gather to learn, make friends, and discover new ideas for keeping the planet healthy. It’s inexpensive too. You cannot beat $45 for a whole weekend pass — that’s cheaper than most state fairs but the ecological value you’ll walk away with is huge.

There’s going to be over 50 workshops, usually the workshops include learning opportunities for…

Solar Electric Systems, Strawbale Construction, Socially Responsible Investing, Hydrogen Power, Building with Bamboo, Restorative Farming, Cob Construction, Industrial Hemp, Ecological Design, Permaculture, Green Power Options, Solar Cooking, Electric Vehicles, Sustainable Wastewater Design, Government Rebates for Renewables, Fuel Cells, Yoga and more.

There’s the traditional yearly Moondance — an after hours celebration complete with music, djs, dancing, veggie oil wrestling, the Haute Trash Fashion Show, and more.

Food: Organic of course, but also organic beer, wine, fair trade coffee and all the food containers from vendors have reusable and / or made of compostable requirements.

The Sol Fest area of California is so beautiful. Truly. It’s a great family or singleton event. If you can’t make it this year absolutely try for the 2008 festival (I’ll actually be at that one — bonus!)

it would be cool to go…I am intensely interested in green-ness..and especially straw bale structures. I am trying to figure out if I could pull off a straw bale barn?

I don’t know that would be a ton of work. A TON. Straw bale is not easy. If you can get some people who have done it to help it will go faster but I know straw bale homes that have taken over two years. There can be all sorts of issues. But it could be done. Have you seen the DVD Building With Awareness? That’s a good one if you’re interested in straw bale.

I am actually interested in a barn. Period. the lean-to thing that houses my horses in inclement weather is a little too cozy for the three of them and the mares make the gelding stand just outside it.

Well… you could find some reclaimed wood. That would be cool. Or maybe… I’ll pick you up next year on the way to Sol Fest; we’ll go, learn how to throw down a faster straw bale, pick up some wandering hippies there, go back to your place, and get busy building! How’s that sound? You can bring baked goods!
