How to Use Spam to Build an Offbeat House

by Jennifer Chait on September 24th, 2007

If you’re thinking this is going to be some sort of eco-homework assignment where I give you detailed instructions about how to turn paper into a livable offbeat house; well, it’s not. It’s also (sadly so) not a post about an edible spam house.

Did I just use edible and spam in the same sentence? Shudder.

In fact it’s something entirely different from anything I’ve ever seen. I think the design is bordering on mad genius it’s so clever.

This year Alessandro Ludovico curated SPAM: Art Digital a la Carta, a collection of works that according to Sonar, is one way to take the spam, “that we delete every morning without a second thought” and turn it into an, “artistic device.” Nice. One of the featured artists is Alex Dragulescu with a piece called “Spam Architecture

Take a look at how beautiful spam can be…

How does it work? Well, here’s what Dragulescu site reports:

“The images from the Spam Architecture series are generated by a computer program that accepts as input, junk email. Various patterns, keywords and rhythms found in the text are translated into three-dimensional modeling gestures.”

Wow. I could not have explained it better myself — actually I could not have explained that period.

I like it. There’s something very stark yet alluring about it. Not that the next home I build will be spam based; but hey, you never know. That first structure above looks pretty close to some of the homes we’ve seen here.

SPAM: Art Digital a la Carta is very interesting; there’s a spam blog, spam letters, and more. Check it out.

spamIf you’re depressed that this was clearly not a traditional Spam house or just feel like hearing some sad old man in a chef’s hat say, “Welcome to my spam party” then head on over to the tackiest site I’ve ever seen.
