Offbeat Homes

How to build an offbeat Christmas structure in two easy steps

by Jennifer Chait on December 4th, 2007

1. Build a house shaped like a duck.

2. Light that sucker up and coerce the town children to sing duck carols around it.

I bet those lights you put up at your house don’t seem so festive anymore.

My kids would love to live in a house like that!

Christmas duck sounds more like dinner than a dwelling. My son thinks it’s pretty cute.

That’s awesome. Do you have a picture of the back. If so, does it have a back door, my kids are dying to know. And thank you, we now have to look for a duck house if we move from here, ever. [darn kids]

Bridget, hello — what child would not want to live in a duck?

    Linette ~ Yikes eating duck!

Julie ~ I don’t know about the back door but it was built in the 30s making it a very old offbeat wonder which is kind of cool. Glad the kids are making you move into one. Remember to send pics when you do ;)

This duck house reminds me, most disturbingly, of two things:

    (1) The Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe — no doubt it’s the Mother Goose association — and

    (2) a hunter’s blind that I saw once…. It was shaped like a giant goose, with a door in the tail end where the big manly hunters were meant to crouch, guns at the ready, to take down any passing geese. And I can’t hlep envisioning those passing geese, who look down from the sky and say, “Man, look at the size of that bird! Must be one rockin’ food supply down in that field… let’s fly down there, all unsuspecting, and check it out.”

And I have to go away and look at non-poultry off-beat homes now, to erase that mental image. :)

Hey; I have a shoe house on here Jen… somewhere. The hunter deal well, that’s all you. That’s a horrid thought. I think this structure was originally used to sell ducks and eggs from.
