Featured Architect of the Week: SALA Architects
This will be our last feature post with SALA Architects. Tomorrow we’re moving on. So far we’ve seen the very nice Freeman House, the unique Lake Superior Tower Retreat, and the breath taking Johnson Residence.
Whew. Last up I think I’d like to share…
The Tester Writer’s Cabin in Deer Lake, Wisconsin designed by Katherine Hillbrand with Ann Hauer. At first glance this home may not look terribly offbeat. I however, think this is one of those homes you don’t see every day yet would live in thus going back to my original argument for SALA as featured Offbeat architects because they seem to specialize in offbeat livability.

I like that the windows seem to take up so much room and angle around the corners. This window technique really adds style to this house. It almost looks like a home built from blocks or a puzzle you could take apart.
This home was built as a writer’s retreat and includes a screened porch, loft, and wood shop. I bet I could write pretty well here.

SALA Architects are not all about residential and retreats. They also complete remodel projects, non-residential like the amazing Stillwater Public Works and the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Visitor Center, and sometimes take part in strange and beautiful projects like Ghost Lab 6 .
The SALA site explains, “The Ghost Lab is the brainchild of Canadian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons that annually brings approximately twenty architecture students and practitioners to the ruins of a rural coastal village to collaborate on the design and construction of a vernacular architectural folly. Ghost Lab 6 was the creation of two “lanterns” built to memorialize the crumbling foundations of two ancestral brother’s homes.”
Bryan Anderson one of the SALA team members attended Ghost Lab 6 in Kingsburg, Nova Scotia during July of 2004 as a SALA Ambassador. I LOVE the lantern project that Ghost Lab 6 built — it’s such a great idea and was executed beautifully (at least it looks as if it was from the photos).
Take a look. First, the builders…

Next, what appears to be dusk; my favorite time of day. I am mezmerized by this photo — not sure what it is about it but it’s so peaceful. I wish I was there.

Finally at night with the blazing going on.
