Bishop Castle - One Man’s Construction Project

by Kevin Humphrey on March 21st, 2006

Bishop Castle - One Man's Construction ProjectHigh in the mountains of southern Colorado, one can find what is billed as the ‘Real Colorado Renaissance‘. A life-encompassing project known as the Bishop Castle and described as the ‘Largest One Man Construction Project in the Country, quite possibly the World!‘ From the web site…

Built entirely with the two hands of ONE MAN with the support of God and a loving family, the BISHOP CASTLE is living testiment to what a poor man can accomplish in a free country armed with his dreams and the determination to make them real.

Inspiring is the tale of how this 160 FOOT TALL! monument has come to be enjoyed by thousands, complete with a grand ball room, stained glass windows, and a Fire Breathing Dragon!

Well, it really wouldn’t be a castle without a fire breathing dragon now would it?

It’s all the work of Jim Bishop. He started construction on the Bishop Castle in June of 1969, and according to the web site, he was still going strong in the summer of 2003 when the site was last updated. Does anyone know if he’s still going?

Check it out for yourself at www.bishopcastle.org.

Jim is still hard at work as of August 14, 2006. He was in the process of inserting his largest rock yet on the outer wall of the trench It will eventually surround the castle. The trench will be 3 stories deep with additional rooms branching off. A bobcat was added to the worksite this summer. The legal system is still being held at bay and Jim seems to be in great spirits. There is an area also marked as the future home of an additional 250 foot tower.
