2010 Imperative Emergency Teach-In

Today was the Live Web Cast Emergency Teach-In. The overall atmosphere, or theme, was very positive. I was pleasantly surprised there was not a political overtone followed by Bush bashing. All of this left me feeling overwhelmingly positive and ready to make an impact.

The simplest and cheapest way to implement change is through design, planning, and innovation. Edward Mazria, AIA (founder of Architecture 2030) proposed to teachers to add this one sentence to projects scopes from now on:

“All projects be designed to engage the environment in the way that dramatically reduces or eliminates the need for fossil fuels.”

Actually, I believe this sentence should be adopted by all of us!

Some more facts for the building community to think of: The building sector is responsible for 48% of the U.S. energy consumption. The way that breaks down, 40% (of the 48%) is operations and the remaining 8% actual materials. Another, The building sector is also responsible for 76% of the U.S. Electric consumption. Listen to the rest of Edward Mazria AIA presentation, this is not the same one given today, but it does have the same information and
it will still move you! The 2010 Imperative presentation will be available here on Friday.
